Officially titled the Republic of Colombia, this country has a highly diversified economy. Major exports include oil, coal, coffee, bananas, gold and cut flowers. 70% of cut flowers imported into the USA are from Colombia. Manufacturing represents about 21% of Colombia's GDP.

Although Colombia has a varied range of exports and it is rich in natural and mineral resources, unemployment stood at 12 % and the poverty rate at 46% in 2009 which are above the regional average.
At 1,141,748 sq. km. (441,020 sq. mi.), Colombia, – located in the north-western corner of South America – is one of that continent's largest countries. The population of 44,928,970 million speaks the official language, Spanish. As of July 2000 the national currency, the Colombian Peso, was valued at US$1.00 for 2,118 pesos.
