In the second quarter of 2000 Grace, Kennedy & Company Co., Ltd. was invited to enter into negotiations with Nissan Motor Company, Japan, for the distribution of Nissan vehicles in Jamaica in a joint venture deal with Goddard Enterprises Limited headquartered in Barbados. Goddard’s currently operates Nissan dealerships in Barbados, St. Lucia and St. Vincent.
After exhaustive evaluation of the project along with long negotiations with Nissan’s negotiation team, a team was invited to go to Japan to participate in their Global Executive Conference and continue further negotiations to represent Nissan in Jamaica.
Immediately after the Executive Conference, the agreement was signed on November 6, 2000. It also included an agreement to distribute trucks for Nissan Diesel Co. as well as forklift heavy duty tow trucks with Nissan Forklift Co.
Fidelity Motors was incorporated in Jamaica during the month of December as the joint venture vehicle to provide Jamaican consumers with a wide range of Nissan Vehicles. The share holding in the joint venture at that time was 70% Goddard’s and 30% Grace Kennedy. The company is managed by Goddard Enterprises Limited.
This foray into the Jamaican market, of 2.8 million people, the kind of expansion which General Manager of Courtesy Garage, Nicholas Mackie, views as challenging in a dynamic industry.
In 2009, Grace Kennedy took the decision to concentrate on its core business and offered GEL its shares in Fidelity Motors. Goddard Enterprises Limited acquired the shares and Fidelity Motors is now a fully owned subsidiary of Goddard Enterprises Ltd.
